Creekside Reserve California Native Plant Demonstration Garden

Greenspace’s vision was to plant a California native demonstration garden, bringing together a botanical garden, a habitat garden and a forum for education.

The garden provides habitat for birds, invertebrates and wildlife. It is a place to learn about native plants, their value, see how they look throughout the year, get ideas, and enjoy the space.

Why California Natives?

Native plants and wildlife have co-evolved over millennia and rely on each other for survival. Native trees, grasses, shrubs, vines, perennials, all serve important functions in the landscape for wildlife and ecosystem health. Native plants supports wildlife by providing habitat, food, shelter and nesting material for birds, mammals, reptiles, pollinators and insects. Native plants promote soil health, enable water conservation and preserve the extraordinary biodiversity of California.

Location and garden info

The garden is located in downtown Cambria, open from dawn to dusk and dog friendly. The garden features labeled plants and an arbor with benches. Stop by today and enjoy the wonderful sights, sounds and scents of the native garden.

The volunteer time of horticultural experts and ecologists were invaluable in planning, designing and implementing the garden.

The native garden was planted in 2023. The Greenspace members, volunteers, donors, sponsors, board members, business donations and grants helped to create this beautiful space.

The Design

The classic design of this garden incorporates layers of plants with different heights, taller plants in the back, plant screens, ground covers and mixed shrubs and perennial flowers throughout. Plants were selected for suitability to the local environment while incorporating deer resistant plants. The garden also features a native grass section with both warm and cool season grasses planted.
